Charades is a team game. The essential element of the game is guessing. In each turn, each team guesses a password or passwords, presented by one of the team members for example Know the Ropes in category Idioms. For this reason it is often required that a team has at least 3 members. In various stages, the riddles are presented through gestures (pantomime) or drawings (pictionary). Neither during the demonstration nor during the drawing is it allowed to use words or make other sounds, which would suggest the password.
When drawing, it is also not allowed to use gestures or write words (sometimes even individual letters/numbers). During the demonstration it is not allowed to point at people/places in the vicinity of the demonstrator. Many pun organisers also forbid the use of one's own clothes to show colours.
